Potted everbearing strawberries need extra insulation to protect their roots from winter’s harsh freeze-thaw cycle. Without this, the container will keep freezing and thawing, putting the plant’s roots at risk of freezing out.
You have two main options for protection: bringing the pots indoors or burying them in the ground for the winter.
If you have garden space, dig a hole the size of your container, “plant” the pot in the ground, and add a few inches of mulch on top. This setup mimics the insulation of in-ground plants and can work well for any perennial in containers.
If burying isn’t possible, bring your pots into a garage or basement that stays cool but doesn’t freeze. Position the pots against an interior wall for added warmth. When stored indoors, mulch isn’t necessary.
