You can assess the viability of your saved marigold seeds through a straightforward germination test. Perform this test at least two to three weeks before you intend to plant the seeds.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Take 10 seeds from your saved seed packet and spread them out on the bottom half of a damp paper towel.
  2. Fold the paper towel in half so that the seeds are sandwiched between the two sides.
  3. Place the paper towel flat in a plastic bag and seal it to retain moisture.
  4. Keep the bag in a warm spot, away from direct sunlight.
  5. Monitor it daily and ensure the paper towel remains moist. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the paper towel if necessary, making sure it stays damp but not saturated.

This test will help you determine if your marigold seeds are still viable and worth planting.

Knowing Your Germination Rate

After two weeks, assess how many of the seeds have successfully germinated. If you have eight out of the ten seeds sprouting, your germination rate stands at a commendable 80%. A rate of 70% or higher is considered excellent for saved seeds.

If the germination rate is lower, it may lead to uneven sprouting when you plant them. In such a case, it’s wise to sow more seeds than you actually intend to grow and thin them out if necessary.

For optimal results, make use of the seeds you saved in the upcoming spring. This not only saves you money in the long run but also ensures you have a fantastic companion crop ready to go when spring arrives! Happy gardening!
