When applying in early spring, timing is crucial. It’s essential to apply the nematodes when the conditions are just right—not too early and not too late. For optimal effectiveness, wait until daytime temperatures exceed 50°F and the soil temperature rises above 45°F, ensuring that the grubs are near the surface and receptive to the treatment.
While early spring and fall are ideal times for nematode application, it’s best to avoid spraying during summer. When temperatures soar above 80°F, nematodes lose their efficacy in penetrating host grubs, rendering treatment ineffective during the hot summer months.
For comprehensive spraying guidelines, it’s advisable to thoroughly review the package instructions provided by your nematode supplier. Upon receipt, ensure to store the nematodes in a cool environment, such as a refrigerator, to maintain their viability until application.
In addition to the spring treatment, a follow-up spraying in the fall is highly recommended in the first year. This dual approach serves as an effective strategy to eliminate any grubs deposited by beetles post-mating.
